Football umpire

James’ skill as an Australian Rules umpire saw him given the responsibility of umpiring the 1982 and 1984 VFL grand finals.

The first indigenous umpire to take control of the biggest game of the year, James umpired 166 games at the highest level.

The first senior Goulburn Valley Football League match he umpired was between Lemnos and Kyabram as an injury spelled the end of his own playing career.

James is a life member of the Victorian Football Umpires Association and in 1984 received an Order of Australia Medal as well as being named Victorian Aboriginal of the Year.
